A joint study, led by the American University of Sharjah (AUS), discovered potential improvements in recent years to the UAE’s air quality.

Looking at the effects of meteorological parameters on air quality, the two-year study analysed several factors at two sites near Abu Dhabi and Dubai international airports. The results showed a decline in smaller particulate matter in the UAE in 2017, compared to 2016.

“The results indicates major recent improvements to air quality because of government regulations, recent cloud seeding and rain enhancement projects,” said Dr. Yehya El Sayed, Professor of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences at AUS, who co-led the research.

It was noted that in a desert environment, dust can have a significant impact. “This research assessed environmental quality in the region, where exposure to dust is part of daily life. There is a shortage of data available on dust patterns and composition in the Gulf region. Long-term exposure to dust storms is expected to have an impact on our daily lives and operations, which is why we need to monitor their periodic patterns and characteristics,” Dr. El Sayed added.

“For example, dust storms result in reduced visibility that hinders aviation and may cause mechanical problems in cars and airplane engines. Furthermore, dust particulates can affect public health, since they can easily enter the respiratory system and affect the heart and lungs,” he said.

The study offers new data on the seasonal and temporal meteorological climate, which can help regulators adopt measures for alleviating the impact of dust and sandstorms on aviation and public health.

“Detailed assessments of dust contamination and metal concentration can potentially solve or eliminate possible mechanical problems in automobiles and airplane engines, associated with dust. This data can also assist environmental agencies in their regulatory roles,” explained Dr. Sofian Kanan, Professor of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences at AUS, who also co-led the research.

The researchers installed online monitoring stations and dust collectors at two research sites. Collected dust particulates were analysed, and the composition of dust-borne heavy metals concentrations were measured at AUS laboratories.

The study’s outcomes highlighted the need to continuously monitor meteorological parameters in the Gulf region, to predict the potential impact of future weather conditions on air-quality, aviation, airport management and public health. “Due to the ongoing urbanisation of the region, it is essential to collect additional data from various locations over a longer period of time,” Dr. El Sayed said.

The research was sponsored by General Electric Aviation. In addition, new domains and categories with precautionary measures have been added, such as for example, the Outstanding Student’s Award category that encourage students to implement the project of reducing the consumption of electricity and water at home. New domains and categories have been also designed to support and encourage schools and students to participate and implement their projects through working remotely. For example the domains of the Environmental Innovator Best Environmental Initiative in the Artificial Intelligence, and the Creative Writing of a Short Story and the production of short Movie domain which its themes are all related to the current Coronavirus pandemic.

Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), said, “The Sharjah Sustainability Award is one of the most important programs that EPAA hosts and that aims to consolidate the principles of sustainable development in the educational sector,through promoting the spirit of competition among students in schools and universities  to  invent and produce extraordinary sustainable projects that contribute to the development of sustainability on ground, in line with the EPAA’s mission to inspire the youth and encourage a passion for our natural environmental ecosystems.”

Her Excellency added, “We are pleased to have launched the ninth edition of the Sharjah Sustainability Award for both the Universities category and the Green Schools category in October, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Sharjah Education Council, and Sharjah Private Education Authority. The number of schools and educational centers that have participated is 123from various emirates of the country, and 275students from public and private universities in Sharjah taking part.

275 university students participated in various different domains of the SSA that covered each of the award fields, like Applied Scientific Research, Assessment Scientific Research, Designing a Model for Sustainable Environmental Solutions that can be applied on ground, and the domain of Sustainable Architectural Design in the Built Environment, Photography, Production of Green Movie, and the Smart Application of Information on Smart Phones domain.

Virtual workshops

Due to precautionary measures in place to help curb the spread of COVID-19, workshops were held virtually for participating schools on the digital video application “Zoom”, aiming to inform the participants about the importance of the award in terms of its objectives, conditions for participation in it and criteria for evaluating the participating projects, with the focus on the importance of adhering to the terms and criteria of the participation domain as well as the importance of adhering to the terms and specifications of the final project file, as a basic indicator qualifying to win the award. In addition to answering the inquiries and questions of the participants from students, coordinators and officials from schools, youth centers and Sajaya young ladies centers.

The Sharjah Sustainability Award aims to create a sustainable green environment whilst supporting the spirit of competition between different schools and universities. Its mission is to encourage students to find and apply innovative sustainable solutions to pressing environmental issues, and ultimately raise awareness amongst these students of the importance of preserving our environment.

The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah seeks to protect the environment, natural reserves, wildlife and their biodiversity through scientific studies and research. In a bid to support the ongoing national efforts to enhance the capabilities of the educational sector to confront Covid-19 repercussions, the Health Promotion Department, HPD, at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah has released, in cooperation with Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) a series of 16 awareness-raising E-booklets to promote community awareness about the precautionary and preventive measures in schools.

Designed for students, parents, and teaching and administrative staff, the booklets are available in Arabic and English languages, and divided into 8 sections, including a preventive guide for parents, a preventive guide for students, signs and symptoms, ways to immunize the body, the importance of adhering to preventive measures, healthy student meal recipes, information about kids’ lunch box, and tips and advice on how to promote public health during distance learning.

The newly released booklets are part of the executive phases of the “Together we return” campaign launched by the SPEA in partnership with the HPD at the beginning of the new academic year.

Her Excellency Iman Rashid Saif, Director, Health Promotion Department, said: “The updated health information and guidelines in these booklets would help enhance the adherence of students, parents, teaching and administrative staff to the precautionary measures that are approved and issued by competent authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO).”

“Our goal is to encourage healthy lifestyles and develop a healthy and safe school environment. This would positively impact the physical, social, and educational growth of students,” she added.

Thanking the SPEA for its great efforts in making these publications available for students and parents, Iman Rashid Saif threw light on the themes of the booklets, in particular, the preventive guide for students and parents, pointing to the steps students and parents should follow, whether at home, the bus or school, to prevent Covid-19 infection, in addition to several public health awareness topics aimed at encouraging community members to adopt healthy lifestyles and enhance their physical ability to combat infectious diseases.
