GEMS FirstPoint School hosted representatives from Emirates Airline as it marked World Maths Day on 25 March 2019, as part of its ongoing approach to provide students with traditional learning blended with industry-led experiences and qualifications.
Aviation-based activities were included among the many mathematics-inspired challenges, and these were led by Deputy Head of Training at Emirates-CAE, Captain David Ray. Key Stage Four and Five students also had the opportunity to attend a presentation by Captain Ray on “How to Become a Pilot”, and an after-school session was held for parents to ask further questions on “How to Support Your Child to Access the Aviation Industry”.
Students in Years 7-9 had the chance to create an FPG-9 plane and investigate how the control of a model aircraft in flight is an application of Newton’s Third Law. Captain Ray worked closely with pupils, answering questions related to aviation and explaining how mathematics plays a crucial role in all aspects of flying.

We were inspired while we listened to David’s experiences and knowledge of aviation.

Our growing links with industry leaders give students a unique insight into different careers and opportunities.”
During World Maths Day, students from other year groups were also involved in artificial intelligence, virtual reality coding, drone coding workshops, and many more mathematical activities.
Students who displayed an outstanding attitude to learning were rewarded with a “Flying High” ticket, which gained them entry into a draw to put their flying skills to the test on the official Emirates-CAE simulator. The four lucky winners selected will then be able to experience what it is like to pilot a commercial jet.
Moving forward, GEMS Firstpoint School is exploring future opportunities for its students with Emirates CAE, such as internships and out-of-school visits to learn more about aviation and the application of maths in the real world.
