Participates In The Artificial Intelligence Astronomy Workshop 2019 At The European Southern Observatory In Germany

The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST) participated in the Artificial Intelligence Astronomy Workshop (AIA) 2019 at the European Southern Observatory in Garching, Germany. Ms. Aisha Al Owais, a Research Assistant at the Meteorite Center (Machine Learning Group), represented the Academy alongside prestigious international universities such as the University of Cambridge, Oxford University, Granada University, University of Sydney, amongst others. During the workshop, she delivered a talk titled “Hunting Meteorites using Deep Learning,” which harbored the interest of several participants and encouraged discussions of possible future collaborations.

The AIA Workshop featured several tutorials, workshops, and talks by experts from various prominent universities and research centers globally and covered a range of topics including using Deep Learning for molecular simulations, active learning in astronomy, Deep Learning for Young Stellar Objects, recognizing eclipses in binaries, amongst others.

The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST) focuses on participating in such conferences and events nationally and internationally to serve its mission of serving the scientific community, and disseminating knowledge and understanding in the field of astronomy, space sciences, and technology to students, researchers, and enthusiasts alike. This is following the vision set by its Founder His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah. SAASST also aims to develop the national human cadres to lead in these fields, encourage scientific research in the field of astronomy and space sciences while developing their technologies, contribute to the national space sector, and finally, strengthen national and international relations to develop the sector.
